Improving Dementia Care for Gitxsan First Nations People

 This project originated from nursing staff’s learning need for knowledge, approach, attitude, and skills in dementia care that was identified by the Gitxsan Health Society. In collaboration with First Nations Authority, Society sought to educate nurses on how provide culturally appropriate older persons living dementia, also increase understanding of nurses, family caregivers, wider community about as a chronic condition. involved mixed-methods approach (multiple qualitative approaches, well quantitative component). The team guided at each stage Cultural Advisory Council four Elders recognized Knowledge Holder community. strong element reciprocal co-learning knowledge exchange. From discussions exchange members, three large interlinking themes emerged guide researchers: (a) loss grief; (b) relationality; (c) access connection. These gave voice gaps needs care, but highlighted potential areas strength can be built improve person dementia.
